Lucy Hewitt is a photography student at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Originally from China, she was adopted at 14 months old. Her family moved to Tennessee when she was 3. With a young love for photography, a neighbor suggested that she looked into SCAD and she was immediately impressed by the school’s website. Lucy sat down with Trespass Chicago to discuss her upcoming blog that focuses on food and is guaranteed to make your stomach grumble.
Mary Tres: When did you first become interested in photography?
Lucy Hewitt: I’ve always been interested in photography. Ever since I was in elementary school, I wanted to be a photographer. They obviously did not have that as an occupation that I could color in, so I was really frustrated about that. But I’ve always loved taking pictures.
MT: How would you describe your style of photography?
LH: My style of photography is very colorful. I'm still trying to discover my own signature on certain stuff. But I think with food photography, I like to make it really colorful and interesting so people will want to eat it.
MT: What do you like to take pictures of the most?
LH: Food. Definitely food.
MT: You often assist others on their shoots as well, can you describe what that’s like?
LH: Assisting others is really fun. I actually learn a lot. I assist for this photographer named Kristopher Dobbins and he's a great influence on my photography. He’s really helpful and during his shoots, he will stop and explain stuff that he's doing. So I feel like assisting is a great way to learn.
MT: So you’re a brand ambassador for Brkn Image. Can you explain that role?
LH: Being an ambassador for Brkn Image is just representing the company and their background and beliefs. They send you a lot of awesome stuff to wear and represent. As an ambassador you take pictures of their clothing, wear it and then promote it to other people to use.
MT: You’re currently working on your upcoming blog. What is the blog's focus?
LH: The blog's focus is on food, for the most part. It’s going to have my photography on there eventually, but right now I’m just trying to build a big portfolio of food from different restaurants.
MT: What inspired you to start it?
LH: What made me want to start it was my ‘boss slash mentor.’ He suggested it. He was like “You should work on starting a blog because I think you'd be really good at it.”
MT: How long do you hope to work on it?
LH: I hope to work on it permanently as my new website.
MT: Do you plan on expanding it at all besides just including food? Taking images of anything else?
LH: Yeah it's going to eventually include people as well because I want to get into lifestyle photography.
MT: Where do you hope to take your career in photography?
LH: I hope to take my current photography all the way throughout the world. I definitely want to travel with my photography. I’m going to work for myself, I’m not going to work for someone else.
