Dollop Coffee & Hoosier Mama Pie Company opened its relatively large cafe space in 2013, on a strip of the area that was newly reconstructed. The architecture itself created a younger, more modern appearance to the Evanston neighborhood. The cafe was a new, exciting presence in the otherwise larger chains that consumed the area; such as Starbucks and Panera Bread.
Last week, my girlfriends and I visited Hoosier Mama with a mission for pie and coffee. Upon entering, there was a line almost out the door and all the tables were already taken inside. The menu was extensively long, written in chalk, and placed upon the wall. While the colors were fairly bright, and the post-it notes naming the various pies and scones added a fun touch; there was an air of uptightness that lingered within the space. This is partially due to the staff that didn’t engage in small talk, possibly due to the number of people in line. It was also in conjunction with the people sitting in the cafe, most alone and working on their laptops.
Thus upon ordering a slice of chocolate cream pie and espresso pie, with an iced coffee and two iced mochas, we decided to sit outside. The mood was immensely more opening, as there were more children sitting in the outside area, and we were also able to enjoy watching passersby. When it finally came down to indulging on our sweet snack (literally), it felt like a sin. The espresso pie was thick and elegantly sweet, with a bit of crunch due to the little pieces on top. It was hard to finish and when it finally came to the crust, the taste was fairly buttery and I had to stop. The iced mocha was superb and definitely refreshing on the 90 degree day.
Despite the prices being a tad expensive, I would highly recommend venturing to Dollop Coffee & Hoosier Mama. Just make sure you bring a pal to split a piece of pie with; as they are way too filling for a single stomach.
